“Step Brothers” opened last night (June 25th) and I opted to see “X-Files: I Want To Believe” in lieu of the obviously more popular choice. While some might say it was a mistake, I don’t think it was, since really, going into “Step Brothers” you already know what your going to get.
The back story to the movie takes place entirely in the opening credits, and it is done well, doesn’t feel rushed at all. The first two shots introduce us to Brennan Huff (Will Ferrell), age 39 in the film and Dale Doback (John C. Reilly), age 40 in the film. Both live at home. Huff with his mother Nancy (Mary Steenburgen), and Dale with father Dr. Rob (Richard Jenkins).
After getting two good laughs in the first two shots, we get the very quick back story. Nancy meets Rob, and they get hitched, details not required.
We get a few good quotes from the next series of shots as Brennan and Dale both show displeasure with their respective parental units about the merging of families.
The next thirty minutes or so is what you get from the preview, the fighting, the arguing between Dale and Brennan…
You know what? I’m not going to write anymore about this movie, since really, it wasn’t any good. I mean sure, I laughed, I would go see it again, but fart jokes does not a good movie make.
The movie is rated R in the US, making it a 14A in Ontario here, and let me tell you, the subject matter of it.. some of the jokes and comments, if it was 18A here I wouldn’t have questioned it. Giving the movie a 14A means kids bring their “mature” ten year olds. Mistake? Yea. I saw two families leave in the first ten minutes.
The movie is great for quoting however, and you will be left with the image of John C. Reilly being “folded into a ball and being placed in [character's] vagina, so [she] can feel his hair tickle [her].”
Mercy.
